With the recent release of the New SharePoint Communication Sites for SharePoint Online, we’ve had many in the community ask what more is to come on SharePoint’s roadmap. With over 20 new updates currently in development for SharePoint On-premise and SharePoint Online, we thought we’d share nine that we believe will make the most impact for you and your organization.
Personalized News on SharePoint Online Home Page
You know the personal view of team news you receive in the SharePoint mobile app? Well, soon you will be able to benefit from this same experience on your SharePoint home page in Office 365. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this feature, this means that you will receive an assortment of team news in one central place from all team sites you are active in. This is an ideal time-saver for when you need quick snapshots and updates from the sites you frequently interact with.
Web Part: Office 365 Groups calendar
Hallelujah! When this new web part is released, you will be able to embed an Office 365 group calendar right into a team site or communication site. This will be a great tool to keep team members up to date on upcoming events in addition to providing transparency around events occurring either organization-wide, or team-specific.
SharePoint Home Personalized Search
Imagine a world where you’re fed the right information, in the right context and the right time. Rather than starting from square one when starting a new project or task, you will benefit from the accumulated knowledge of all that is relevant. This is exactly what Microsoft has in mind for Personalized Search right from your SharePoint Home. Utilizing Microsoft Graph capabilities, this new update will enable you to locate expertise by searching for keywords like skills, expertise, projects or interests. This will run-through to documents or presentations and may even suggest items you need to see without even having to type in a search term.
SharePoint News Notifications
SharePoint News is great for "pull-type communications" wherein you search or see what you choose. We work with many communication professionals who are begging for "push-communications" in SharePoint. It’s about to happen—on-device notifications will soon be fed to users so you can proactively keep up with those you work with and what they're working. Work updates will be fed to us similar to the social networks we interact with like FaceBook and Twitter.
Connect a Site to an Office 365 Group in SharePoint Online
Have you been waiting for the ability to take an existing SharePoint Online team site and connect it with an Office 365 Group? Added to the road map on June 13th, this will soon be a possibility. With this change, SharePoint team sites and Microsoft Teams will now be connected to the same Office 365 Group so they share the same list of members and stored files. This will enable you to engage in productivity-driven actions like starting group chats about team initiatives. Chats will be interactive and available for all group member no matter when they join.
People Cards SharePoint Online Home Page in Office 365
Do you work on a cross-functional teams with members spread across the world? Do you struggle to keep in know about the people you work with. The new People Cards for SharePoint in Office 365 will ensure that you never forget a name, face, or position of your collegues. Based on the content people create, or the information they share, you will be able to hover over names or faces on your SharePoint Home page to reveal cards that share contact information, organizational relationships and the documents they have been working on. Talk about transparency!
SharePoint Mobile App for Android
At Microsoft Ignite 2016, it was announced that SharePoint was going to become a more responsive and mobile-first experience. They have remained true to this promise and will soon be releasing some game changing mobile app features for Android and Windows 10 devices (sorry, iOS users…):
Soon you will benefit from being able to access your on-premises SharePoint environment from the SharePoint mobile app for Android and Windows 10 devices. This access will be for all sites you belong to even if they are behind firewalls. If your organization uses a hybrid deployment model with SharePoint Online, you will be able access sites that are both on-premises and in the cloud.
Need to create and publish news stories on the fly? Well now you can on SharePoint Online, right from your device. Add images, embed documents, and format the content of your story with a truly rich publishing experience. Your news stories will appear on the SharePoint team site you publish it to and the personalized News tab in SharePoint home in Office 365.
Team news roll-up
